How to store wet food for cats

As long as wet food hasn’t been opened, there’s no need to refrigerate it. The ingredients are cooked at high temperatures during preparation to kill bacteria, so as long as the packaging stays sealed, wet cat food can have a shelf life of several months or even years.

Once you open a serving of wet food, be sure to cover any leftovers and always store them in the fridge. Cans can easily be sealed with a plastic can lid, and cat food pouches or Catit Creamy tubes can be closed by simply folding over the top and securing it with a clip.

Things get even easier when you spoil your cat with Catit Cuisine wet food. Our delicious varieties come in Tetra cartons, which are incredibly easy to open and reseal. Just watch the video for instructions. If none of the options above work for your cat food packaging, you can store leftovers in a sealed plastic container and keep them in the fridge.

For how long can I keep cat food in the fridge?

Once opened, wet cat food doesn’t stay fresh for very long, which is why it’s typically sold in small portions. When properly sealed and refrigerated, leftovers remain safe to serve for two to three days, but when left out in a cat bowl, wet food will spoil within hours.

Before serving any leftover wet food to your feline friend, always check for an off smell, discoloration or mold. If you need to store wet cat food for longer than a day or two, freezing it could be an option.

How to store dry food for cats?

Unlike wet cat food, dry food should never be stored in the fridge. Once the bag is opened, keep cat kibble away from moisture, heat, and light. Dry cat food contains nutritional oils that are great for your feline’s health but can go rancid when exposed to air. Therefore, always carefully seal an opened bag of cat food, or better yet, use the Catit PIXI Smart Vacuum Container.

Smart technology removes air and moisture from the container and automatically maintains a vacuum, keeping your feline’s food fresh for much longer.
